Healthy Indian food

Have you ever wondered if it’s possible to eat healthily from your local Indian Takeaway? Well the best method is to learn more about the dishes and also how to cook them from scratch so that you know exactly what ingredients have been used and in what quantities. One method is to ditch the heavy sauce curries such as Tikka Masala and Biryanis and instead opt for a drier dish made from chicken or fish. Some Indian dishes are also steamed or stir fried and this is preferable to deep fried food or foods rich in oils such as Onion Bhaji’s.

Another option is to ditch the meat option entirely and go for a light vegetable curry. The beauty of Indian food is that the spices used can make up for the blandness of the vegetables and make a very tasty dish.

When it comes to ordering Rice, then choose plain Basmati rather than the more popular Egg Fried variety – this is significantly lower in calories and also fat content. Lentils are another great choice in healthy Indian food and also a super source of protein. Try red Masoor lentils or yellow mung lentils – these are tasty, providing sweet and buttery flavors respectively.

For a really healthy choice go for a large bowl of mung bean served with brown Basmati rice or spiced vegetables. This will provide high nutritional value and you will feel very full very quickly! One excellent dish is Punjabi Mung Bean Curry and you can find it on a number of Indian Takeaway menus. Alternatively give your local takeaway a call and ask if they would be prepared to cook it to order. This is a very tasty and filling dish and you may even prefer it to normal curry once you have tasted it!

Don’t underestimate the value of using vegetables in Indian cooking. The right vegetables, cooked by steaming or broiling and then flavored by the use of various spices will provide not only a great taste but a diet that is low in both fat and cholesterol. An item to avoid is the use of nuts, these are fine in small amounts but dishes which make copious use of them will be high in calories and also be hard to digest.

So, if you are watching your weight and love the great flavors of Indian Takeaway food then follow the tips above and you will find that you can still enjoy the taste of takeaway food whilst still losing weight!
